A digital signature certificate, also referred to as a public key certificate,
is used to sign electronic documents. Digital signatures use asymmetric
cryptography and are based on public key technology. Each digital
signature certificate owner's identity is verified based on a public key
and a private key. The keys which are generated with an algorithm are
actually mathematical codes.
Once the user initiates the signing
process, a code is generated. The code is unique for each process and
content. The individual's private key is now used to encrypt this
mathematical code. This is known as a digital signature.
Class 2 digital signature certificates
issued by TCS can be purchased online. TCS is a licensed certifying authority. The certificates are legally
valid, as per the Indian Information Technology Act, 2000.

Components of a digital signature certificate:
Serial number: Identifies the unique certificate.
Subject: Identifies the vendor or the organisation.
Signature algorithm: The signature is created using this algorithm.
Signature: The signature is used to verify the identity of the issuer.
Issuer: It the organisation which verified the information of the applicant and issued the digital signature certificate.
Validity: The period for which the digital certificate is valid. Class 2 digital signature certificates are valid for one year or two years.
Public key: The public key is a mathematical code generated using an algorithm.
Thumbprint algorithm: The algorithm which
is used to hash the public key certificate. Cryptographic hash
functions has applications in digital signatures, message authentication
codes and other forms of authentication.
Thumbprint: The hash is used as an abbreviated form of the public key certificate.

How to apply for a class 2 digital signature certificate?
a) Visit https://www.esign.in to apply for the certificate of your choice. All you have to do is select the following details and fill up your form:

The certificate type – Signing certificate or Signing and encryption certificate
- Validity of the signature certificate – One year or two years.
- The user type – Individual, company or government and banking
b) Pay the charges for the certificate as per your selection.
c) Download the forms, fill them out completely, follow
the instructions on the form and forward them to our office. You can

TCS CA business was closed on 17th March 2014.
TCS CA will now be issuing digital signature certificates only to the public sector
( government) and will continue to support all retail segment, digital signature
certificates issued until that date, for their entire lifetime. Adweb will also
continue to support all those digital signature certificates it issued as a Registration
Authority until such time as they are due for renewal.
